Only 7 of 40 Renovation Searches Are Shortlisting You

Contents13

Three different people type what looks like the same search. One is about to spend forty thousand dollars. One is a neighbour on the floor below, annoyed about drilling at eight in the morning. One is a homeowner who has just realised they might need a permit and is quietly panicking.

Only 7 of 40 renovation searches are shortlisting anybody. On 19 September 2026 we pulled 113 real search suggestions for Singapore renovation and interior design and grouped them by what the person wanted. Of the 40 suggestions for "hdb renovation", 7 were about choosing a contractor. The other 33 were about money, timing, paperwork and complaints.

That matters to an owner because most renovation websites are built as though every visitor arrived ready to shortlist.

Where these numbers come from

We ran three seeds through our own keyword tool on 19 September 2026: "hdb renovation" (the service), "interior design singapore" (the category) and "renovation contractor singapore" (the provider). The tool expands each seed through Google Autocomplete, which returns the phrases people actually type.

We count phrases, not searches. Every number on this page is a count of suggestions in a group, never a search volume. We do not publish monthly volumes: the ones any keyword tool shows are estimates, and the method behind them is rarely visible to the person reading the chart.

Anyone who quotes you a search volume to the last digit is selling you certainty they do not have.

The buyer: eight of forty rows are about money

Eight of the 40 "hdb renovation" suggestions were price questions. "hdb renovation price", "how much does hdb renovation cost", "3 room hdb renovation cost", "hdb renovation cost breakdown", "hdb renovation cost 4 room" and "hdb renovation budget" were among them.

The specific ones are more useful than the broad ones. Several named a flat type, and others asked for a breakdown or a budget.

Read that list again and notice what it is not. Nobody typed "renovation services". They typed a flat type and a number.

An owner who publishes a price band by flat type answers eight of these rows at once. An owner who publishes "contact us for a quote" answers none of them, and the renovation SEO guide makes the same point from the ranking side.

The neighbour: one of the timing questions is not a customer

Six of the 40 rows were about timing, and the most telling of them was "what time can hdb renovation start".

That is almost certainly not a homeowner planning a renovation. It reads like somebody being woken up.

The answer is public and specific. MyNiceHome's HDB renovation guide sets general renovation hours at Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm, not on Sundays or public holidays, and noisy renovation at Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm only, with no weekends, public holidays or eves of major public holidays.

Here is where we cost ourselves something. If you write that page, some of its traffic will never convert, and we would still tell you to write it. Two reasons. It is the question your future customer's neighbour will ask about your work, and answering it well is the cheapest reputation you can buy. And "hdb renovation timing", "how long does hdb renovation take" and "renovation hdb timing" are buyer questions sitting in the same cluster.

What we will not do is put that page's traffic in a report and call it a result. An agency that shows you a traffic chart without telling you which of those visitors could ever buy is showing you a number, not a business outcome. Our note on proving SEO ROI in Singapore sets out the honest version.

The worried owner: eleven of forty rows are paperwork

The largest group in the "hdb renovation" cluster was rules and permits: 11 of 40 rows. "hdb renovation permit", "hdb renovation guidelines", "hdb renovation permit form", "how to apply hdb renovation permit" and "how to check hdb renovation permit status" were among them, along with "how to get hdb renovation license".

That last one is a homeowner using the wrong word, and it tells you how unsure these people are.

The authority's own answer is short. MyNiceHome states that "as the HDB flat owner, you are responsible for obtaining all HDB renovation permits required for your flat's renovations before renovation works begin", and that "the renovation contractor you engage must be listed in the HDB Directory of Renovation Contractors". HDB's Directory of Renovation Contractors is where that register lives.

A renovation firm that explains the permit process clearly, and says plainly that it handles the submission, has converted an anxiety into a reason to call. Eleven of forty rows is not a side topic. It is the biggest single thing these searchers want to know.

Only seven of forty rows are shortlisting anybody

Seven of the 40 rows were about picking a firm. "hdb renovation contractor", "hdb renovation contractor singapore", "best hdb renovation contractor singapore" and "hdb renovation contractor list" were among them.

Those seven are the most valuable rows on the page, and they are also the hardest. They are where the "top 10" blogs live, and where the Reddit threads live.

The point for an owner is proportion. If your entire website is built to win those seven rows, you have built for fewer than one in five of the phrases people actually type, and you meet them at the exact moment they trust you least.

"Interior design singapore" is not a customer keyword

The second seed produced the clearest finding of the day. Of 40 suggestions for "interior design singapore", 8 were not customers at all. They were job, hiring, course, salary and polytechnic searches: "interior design singapore job", "interior design singapore hiring", "interior design singapore course", "interior design singapore salary", "interior design singapore poly", "how to be interior designer singapore", "interior design course singapore price" and "interior designer in singapore salary".

So an interior design firm that builds its homepage around the phrase "interior design singapore" is competing for a phrase that a good share of people type because they want to work there. The property-type versions are the ones that carry buyers: "interior design singapore hdb" and "interior design singapore condo" both describe a person with a flat.

Fourteen of forty suggestions ask someone else about you

The other half of that cluster was reputation. 14 of the 40 rows contained "review", "reviews" or "reddit". Nine of those were a specific named design firm followed by "reviews". Four were Reddit. One was the generic "interior design singapore review".

The provider seed said the same thing. Of 33 suggestions for "renovation contractor singapore", 9 carried "review", "reviews" or "reddit", including "renovation contractor singapore review", and 12 carried a superlative: best, top, good or cheapest.

Put those together and the shape of this market is plain. Your buyer does not search for your services. They search for your name plus the word "reviews", and if they cannot find an answer they ask a forum.

You cannot rank for that search. Someone else's thread will. What you can do is make sure the person who lands there has already seen a page of yours that answered a real question, so they arrive looking for confirmation rather than a verdict. Our note on how AI tools choose which businesses to recommend covers the same dynamic on the assistant side.

Why this page counts phrases instead of quoting volumes

Keyword tools will happily give you a monthly search volume for "interior design singapore". Ours returned an estimate larger than any plausible figure for a country of under six million people. We are not using it, and neither should you.

Estimates like that come from scaling an interest score against a reference keyword. They are an artefact of the method, not a measurement.

We flag it because this is how keyword tools mislead owners. A number with a confident chart looks like a fact. Any figure without a stated source and a stated method is a guess wearing a tie, including ours. A count of the phrases Google itself suggests is smaller and duller, and you can check it yourself.

The four pages this tells an owner to build

In our view, a Singapore renovation or interior design firm with four pages and nothing else would outperform most of the sites we see with forty.

  • A price page by flat type. Three-room, four-room, five-room, condo. Bands, not a single number, and say what moves a project to the top of the band. This answers the eight price rows.
  • A permit and process page. What needs approval, who submits it, how long it takes, and that you handle it. This answers eleven rows and removes the biggest fear.
  • A timing page. Permitted hours, typical duration by scope, what causes delay. Say out loud that this page is partly for neighbours.
  • A "how to choose" page that names your own limits. Say what you do not do and who you are wrong for. It is the only page on your site that a buyer arriving from a forum thread will believe.

Then ask the assistants what they say about you. Our AI search visibility test shows how to run that without fooling yourself.

What it costs, and what it will not do

Four pages written properly is roughly two weeks of an owner's evenings, or a few thousand dollars if someone writes them with you. The price page is the expensive one, not to write but to decide: publishing bands means your competitors see them and some enquiries self-select out before they call you.

That is a real loss and you should count it. In our view the enquiries you lose to a published price were the ones that were never going to close, but we cannot prove that for your business, and anyone who tells you they can is guessing.

None of this makes you appear in a forum thread, and none of it makes an AI assistant recommend you. Those platforms choose their own answers.

Method and limits

  • One pull, one day. All 113 suggestions came from a single run on 19 September 2026. Autocomplete changes.
  • Three seeds only. "hdb renovation", "interior design singapore", "renovation contractor singapore", Singapore market, quick expansion depth. A deeper pass would return more.
  • Counts, not volumes. Every figure on this page is a count of autocomplete suggestions in a group. We do not publish search-volume estimates.
  • Grouping is a judgement. We assigned each row one primary intent by hand. Reasonable people would move a few.
  • We name no business. Nine rows in the second cluster were a named design firm plus "reviews". We counted them and did not record them.

Our method page sets out how we separate measurements from opinions.

Want your own version of this?

Send us your industry and your three main services, and we will run the same pull and send you back the intent split for your market: what your buyers ask, what your neighbours ask, and which of it your current site answers. It starts as a free demand check through our contact page.

Sometimes the honest answer is that the demand is thin and you should spend the money somewhere else. We would rather tell you that before you pay us than after. If the demand is there, our SEO, AEO and GEO programme starts from S$500/month as the live page states it today.

Figures describe one keyword pull on 19 September 2026. This page names no business.

FAQ

What do Singapore homeowners search before a renovation?

Money, timing and paperwork far more than contractors. In our 19 September 2026 pull of 40 suggestions for "hdb renovation", 11 were about permits and rules, 8 about price, 6 about timing, and only 7 about choosing a contractor. The remainder were scope, ideas and complaints.

Is "interior design singapore" a good keyword to target?

Not on its own. Of 40 suggestions we pulled for it, 8 were job, salary or course searches from people who want to work in the industry, not hire it. The property-type versions, "interior design singapore hdb" and "interior design singapore condo", describe someone with a flat and a budget.

Why do so many renovation searches include the word "reviews"?

Because the purchase is large, infrequent and hard to reverse, so buyers look for an outside verdict. Across two of our three seeds, 14 of 40 and 9 of 33 suggestions contained "review", "reviews" or "reddit". Nine of those were a named firm followed by "reviews".

Should I publish renovation prices on my website?

In our view yes, as bands by flat type, with a note on what moves a project up a band. Eight of the 40 suggestions in our first cluster were price questions, and the specific ones named a flat type. The cost is real: some enquiries will self-select out before they contact you.

Why does this page not show monthly search volumes?

Because every public volume figure is an estimate, and the method behind it is rarely visible to the owner reading it. We count the phrases Google Autocomplete returns and group them by what the searcher wants. A count you can check yourself is more useful than a volume you have to trust.

What time can HDB renovation work start in Singapore?

MyNiceHome's HDB renovation guide states that general renovation is allowed Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm, and not on Sundays or public holidays. Noisy renovation is allowed Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm only, and not on weekends, public holidays or the eves of major public holidays.
