HDB Approved Electrician: 3 of 21 Searches Want a List

Contents10

A flat owner needs wiring work and does the sensible thing: looks for the official list of electricians HDB has approved, so they can pick from it and stop worrying.

There is no HDB approved electrician list in the sense buyers mean. Of 21 Google Autocomplete suggestions for "hdb electrician" that we pulled on 7 October 2026, 5 asked who is approved or licensed and 3 asked for a list by name. Two registers exist. Neither is a list of HDB-approved electricians: EMA licenses the electrical worker, and HDB's directory lists renovation contractors.

That gap between what a buyer searches for and what actually exists is the most valuable page an electrical business in Singapore can own, and almost nobody writes it.

What the 21 suggestions actually asked for

Here is the whole pull, grouped by what the searcher wants. Source: Google Autocomplete and Google Trends, pulled through our own keyword tool for the Singapore market on 7 October 2026, seed "hdb electrician". These are counts of suggestions, not search volumes.

What the searcher wants Suggestions Examples from the pull
Who is approved or licensed 5 of 21 "electrician hdb approved", "hdb licensed electrician singapore"
A list they can choose from 3 of 21 "hdb electrician list", "hdb approved electrician list singapore"
What it costs 6 of 21 "hdb rewiring cost", "how much do electricians charge to wire a room"
Someone nearby 1 of 21 "hdb electrician near me"
A hotline to call 1 of 21 "hdb electrician hotline"
To do it themselves 1 of 21 "what qualifications do i need to rewire a house"

The three "list" suggestions overlap with the five "approved" ones, so the two groups are not additive. Read them together and the picture is one buyer asking a single question in several ways: who is allowed to do this, and where is the official roll call.

Who licenses electrical work in Singapore

The Energy Market Authority does, and it licenses the person, not the company. The EMA handbook on electrical installation licensing, which we fetched on 7 October 2026, states that "A licensed electrical worker is a person who is technically competent in carrying out electrical work and is licensed by EMA."

Three details from that handbook matter to a buyer, and none of them appear in the search suggestions.

First, there are classes. The handbook states: "There are 3 classes of LEW, namely Licensed Electrician, Licensed Electrical Technician and Licensed Electrical Engineer. Only LEWs are allowed under their licence to design, install, repair, maintain, operate, inspect and test electrical and supply installations in accordance with the authorisation set out in Table 1." For a Licensed Electrician, that table gives an approved load "Not exceeding 45kVA" at "1,000V and below".

Second, the scheme is old. Per the handbook, "The licensing scheme for electrical installations was introduced in 1975 to ensure that owners/users of certain electrical installations engage a competent person, viz a licensed electrical worker (LEW), to take charge of and maintain their electrical installations."

Third, and this is the one that surprises people: the handbook states that "All electrical and supply installations used exclusively for domestic purposes are exempted from the electrical installation licensing requirement." The separate installation licence applies to hazardous trades, non-domestic installations above 45kVA, and non-domestic supply installations. A flat is not in that set.

So two requirements are routinely collapsed into one word on marketing pages. The worker needs a licence. A home does not need an installation licence. A page that blurs them is answering a question the buyer did not ask.

This is marketing guidance, not legal or professional advice. Confirm your own licence class, scope and conditions with EMA before you write any of it on a page.

What HDB's register is for

HDB keeps a register, and it is a register of renovation contractors. Its renovation contractors page, which we fetched on 7 October 2026, states that "Contractors must be listed in the DRC before they can carry out renovations in HDB flats."

That is the Directory of Renovation Contractors. It is a real list, it is a real requirement, and it is about renovation works in flats. It is not a list of electricians, and being on it is not the same credential as holding an EMA worker licence.

So the buyer typing "hdb approved electrician list" is reaching for a directory that sits one category away from the thing they need. Our guide for renovation companies in Singapore covers the contractor side of that split.

So is there an HDB approved electrician list?

Not one that answers the buyer's question. There is a directory of renovation contractors kept by HDB, and there is a class of worker licensed by EMA. A business can hold both positions, one, or neither, and the two mean different things.

Which is exactly why this is a page worth writing rather than a problem worth complaining about. The searcher has a wrong premise. Correcting it is a service, and the business that corrects it first is the business they call.

The wrong move is to put "HDB approved electrician" in your title tag and leave the premise uncorrected, because then your page is competing on a phrase while answering nothing. We saw that phrasing in the wild: in our study of ten Singapore electrician pages, published today, five of eight readable pages named a licence in words, including "approved HDB electrician", and none published an actual licence number.

Nobody searching the trade name asks about HDB

Here is the part an owner can act on immediately. We ran a second pull the same day on the plain trade name, seed "electrician singapore", which returned 43 suggestions. None of the 43 mentioned HDB. None contained the word "approved". Exactly one was a buyer asking about licensing at all: "best licensed electrician singapore".

A third pull, seed "power trip singapore", returned 19 suggestions. Three attached a property type: "power trip singapore hdb", "house power trip singapore" and "how to reset power trip singapore hdb". One named a tradesman: "power trip electrician singapore".

Put the three pulls side by side and the pattern is clean. The HDB qualifier does not attach to the trade name. It attaches to the problem and to the question of who is allowed to fix it. So the page where "HDB" earns its place is a problem page or a licensing page, not your general service page.

Most electrical businesses do the reverse. They add "HDB electrician Singapore" to a service page that already says "electrician Singapore", then wonder why the two pages compete with each other and neither answers anything.

The page we would write, and the four lines on it

One page, titled in the buyer's words, answering in the regulator's. Four lines do most of the work:

  1. The plain answer, first. "HDB does not keep a list of approved electricians. Electrical work in Singapore must be done by an electrical worker licensed by EMA." Put it in the first paragraph, not under a fold.
  2. Your licence, with its class. Not "EMA-certified". "Licensed Electrician under EMA" plus the number, so a buyer can check it rather than take your word.
  3. What the DRC is, and whether you are on it. One sentence either way. "We are listed in HDB's Directory of Renovation Contractors" is a different claim from the licence, and saying so plainly is more convincing than merging them.
  4. The cost line. Six of the 21 suggestions asked what it costs. A band for rewiring and a band for a socket beats "affordable" every time.

Then link that page from your service pages, and stop putting "HDB approved" on pages that do not explain it. Our SEO guide for electricians in Singapore covers where each page sits, and our local SEO guide covers the Maps side of the same searches.

What this costs you

Writing the page costs an afternoon. Publishing your licence number costs you the comfort of being unverifiable: a buyer can check it, a competitor can read your class and see the limits of what you are authorised to do, and if your scope is narrower than your marketing implied, that gap becomes visible. Some owners will not want that. It is a fair objection and we will not pretend it away.

The second cost is traffic you give up on purpose. Telling a searcher that the list they want does not exist is a worse answer than they hoped for. A fraction will leave. Our piece on the searches that tell buyers how to skip you makes the same argument in a different trade.

And the point against our own side: if your work is domestic flat repairs, most of the licensing content agencies will happily sell you is irrelevant to your customer. You need one honest page and a visible number. That is not a retainer. If someone quotes you a six-month programme to publish a licence number, you are being oversold.

Method and limits

  • These are counts of suggestions, not search volumes. The figures come from Google Autocomplete expanded through our own keyword tool, with Google Trends used for direction, pulled for the Singapore market on 7 October 2026. We publish how many suggestions appeared and how they group, and no volume estimates.
  • Three seeds, one day. "hdb electrician" (21 suggestions), "electrician singapore" (43) and "power trip singapore" (19). Autocomplete varies by day, device and location, so another pull will not match this one exactly.
  • Grouping is our judgement. We tagged each suggestion by what the searcher appears to want. Groups overlap, so counts within one pull do not sum to its total.
  • The regulatory statements are quoted from EMA's own handbook and HDB's own renovation contractors page, both fetched on 7 October 2026 and linked above. Rules change; check the source before you rely on it.
  • What we did not measure. How many people hold each licence class, how many businesses sit in the DRC, and whether any specific business's claim is accurate. This page names no business.

One next step

If you run an electrical business and you are not sure which of your pages should carry the licensing answer, send us the two pages you think are competing. We will tell you which one to keep and what the other should say instead. It starts as a free visibility check through our contact page.

We will not promise you rankings. What we will do is tell you when the page you already have is enough.

FAQ

Is there an official HDB approved electrician list?

No, not as buyers picture it. HDB keeps a Directory of Renovation Contractors, and its renovation contractors page states that contractors must be listed in the DRC before they can carry out renovations in HDB flats. Electrical work itself must be carried out by an electrical worker licensed by EMA, which is a separate register.

Who licenses electricians in Singapore?

The Energy Market Authority. EMA's handbook defines a licensed electrical worker as "a person who is technically competent in carrying out electrical work and is licensed by EMA", and names three classes: Licensed Electrician, Licensed Electrical Technician and Licensed Electrical Engineer, each with its own approved load and voltage authorisation.

Does my HDB flat need an electrical installation licence?

Per EMA's handbook, no. It states that all electrical and supply installations used exclusively for domestic purposes are exempted from the electrical installation licensing requirement. That is separate from the requirement that the worker doing the job holds a licence. Confirm your own situation with EMA.

Should an electrician's website say "HDB approved"?

Only with the explanation attached. In our 7 October 2026 pull, 5 of 21 "hdb electrician" suggestions asked who is approved, so the demand is real. A page that uses the phrase without saying what HDB's directory is and what EMA licenses answers the search without answering the question.

Which page should carry this answer?

A single page about who is allowed to do electrical work, linked from your service pages. None of the 43 "electrician singapore" suggestions in our pull mentioned HDB, so the qualifier does not belong on your general service page. Keeping it in one place also stops two of your own pages competing.

Can I cite these figures?

Yes. Please cite "SingRank, HDB electrician search demand, 7 October 2026" with a link to this page, and quote each count with its base, such as 5 of 21 suggestions. Note that these are suggestion counts from Google Autocomplete, not search volumes. Corrections are welcome through our contact page.
