AI Citation Sources Singapore: 194 of 341 Were Agency Pages

Contents15

The AI citation sources Singapore buyers were shown on 2 October 2026 were mostly agency pages: 194 of 341 citations from Perplexity and ChatGPT pointed to pages that agencies control. We asked both engines 30 fixed questions a Singapore business might ask before hiring an SEO or GEO agency, and sorted every cited source by type.

When an answer named providers, every citation came from agency sites, agency-written lists, directories or press releases.

Key figures

  • 194 of 341 citations were pages agencies control: 166 from agencies' own sites and 28 from "best agencies" lists that agencies wrote themselves.
  • 14 answers named agencies. Their 119 citations came from four source types only: agency sites 70, agency-written lists 22, directories 17 and press releases 10. News media, forums, Reddit and official documentation supplied none.
  • Those 14 answers named agencies 86 times between them, about six per answer.
  • Number questions ran short of sources. On three of them, Perplexity opened by saying no Singapore figure is published.
  • SingRank was named in 0 of 15 hiring runs. ChatGPT did cite our robots.txt census when asked how many Singapore websites block GPTBot.

Start typing how to get recommended by ChatGPT into Google from Singapore, and one of the completions it offers is "how to get your business recommended by chatgpt". Another search completes as "why is my business not showing up on chatgpt". The question is real, and the usual answer is a list of tactics: write good content, add schema, get mentioned on forums and in the news. We've written that kind of guide ourselves, on why AI search ignores some brands.

That list skips a step. It doesn't look at what the engines actually cite when a buyer asks them for a provider.

So we asked, in the market we know from the inside: Singapore businesses looking for SEO, AEO or GEO help. We wrote 30 questions those buyers ask, ran them, then counted the sources by type, not by name.

We name no agency on this page. The question isn't who won. It's what kind of page the engines reached for.

What we asked, and how we counted

The 30 questions fall into four groups:

Group Questions Example
Hiring 10 "AEO agency Singapore"
Price 5 "how much does GEO cost in Singapore"
How-to 10 "how do I get my Singapore business recommended by ChatGPT"
Numbers 5 "how many Singapore websites block GPTBot"

Perplexity answered all 30. ChatGPT ran a pre-chosen 10, in a temporary chat with personalisation off. It answered 9 and replied to one with a clarifying question. That gave 309 citations from Perplexity and 32 from ChatGPT: 341 in all, across 204 different websites.

For Perplexity a citation is every link in the answer's sources panel. For ChatGPT it is the first link behind each visible citation chip. We didn't open the hidden "+N" sources, so ChatGPT's count is a floor.

We sorted each cited website into one of nine types. An agency's own pages count as agency site. An agency's own "best agencies in Singapore" ranking counts as an agency-written list.

Independent listing sites count as directories, and press releases republished on news sites count as press releases. The rest are media, forums, official documentation, social posts and a catch-all "other" for software vendors and publishers of market figures.

What did the engines cite, by source type?

Across both engines, agencies' own pages were the largest single source by a wide margin.

Source type Citations of 341, with percentage
Agency site 166 (48.7%)
Agency-written "best agencies" list 28 (8.2%)
Directory or listing site 20 (5.9%)
Press release on a news site 12 (3.5%)
News and trade media 22 (6.5%)
Reddit and forums 6 (1.8%)
Official and platform documentation 20 (5.9%)
LinkedIn and other social posts 6 (1.8%)
Other (software vendors, publishers of market figures) 61 (17.9%)

Add the first two rows and you get 194 of 341. More than half of what the engines leaned on was written by agencies, about agencies or their trade.

The mix shifted with the question. For the six price runs, agency sites supplied 33 of 51 citations. For the 12 how-to runs it was 46 of 103, with platform documentation adding 14. For the 7 number-question runs, agency sites fell to 17 of 68, and news media rose to 16.

When the answer names providers, four source types did all the work

This is the finding we'd put in front of any business owner.

Fourteen answers named at least one agency. Every one of them was a hiring question. Those 14 answers cited 119 sources:

Source type Citations in the 14 answers that named agencies Answers where it appeared
Agency site 70 13 of 14
Agency-written list 22 9 of 14
Directory or listing site 17 9 of 14
Press release on a news site 10 7 of 14
News media, forums, documentation, social, other 0 0 of 14

Not one Reddit thread, news story or LinkedIn post was cited in an answer that named a provider. Those sources turned up only in the price, how-to and number answers. When a buyer asked who to hire, every source cited behind the shortlist was a page that providers or listing sites control.

Two details stand out. An agency ranking the "best agencies" was cited in 9 of the 14 answers. And one press release, republished in a news site's press-release section, was cited in five different Perplexity answers. On this day, that release was easy for an engine to find.

This is one market on one day. It doesn't show that a listing or a press release makes an engine name you. It shows what the engines cited when they did name someone.

Where answers ran out of sources

The number questions behaved differently. Asked how many Singapore websites block GPTBot, Perplexity opened with: "There is no reliable public count for all Singapore-based websites that block GPTBot." Asked how many people in Singapore use ChatGPT for search, it said no such figure is widely published.

Its answer on AI Overviews made the same point: Google does not publish a Singapore share.

So Perplexity fell back on global counts and worked estimates. That's a gap, and gaps get filled by whoever publishes a count.

ChatGPT showed what that looks like. Asked the same GPTBot question, it cited our robots.txt census and gave its figure: "only 1 out of 207 sites with working robots.txt files blocked GPTBot—about 0.5%". It named SingRank as the source of that line. That census was a one-day count of 219 Singapore service websites.

Our own result: named in 0 of 15 hiring runs

We ran this on our own market, so here's our score, unflattering as it is. SingRank was named in 0 of 15 hiring runs across the two engines.

Where we did appear, it was through a study and posts, not a service page. ChatGPT named and cited us once, for the GPTBot count. Perplexity listed our blog index in the sources for a Singapore SEO statistics question, and two LinkedIn posts from a SingRank account in the sources for two price questions, without naming us in the answer text.

One run is left out of every count. Our first ChatGPT run of the first hiring question had the account's memory switched on, and it named SingRank.

That answer mentioned "dedicated searches for SingRank", so memory almost certainly steered it. We discarded that run and repeated the question with personalisation off. The clean run didn't name us. If you check your business on your own logged-in account, expect the same flattering bias.

What a Singapore business should do with this

The source types point to three jobs. None is a trick, and none comes with a guarantee.

1. Make your own page the best evidence about you

Agency sites were the largest named source type in the hiring, price and how-to groups, and appeared in 13 of 14 answers that named providers.

Say in plain text what you do and for whom, and where you work. Back it with things a reader can check: dated figures, named credentials, a real process, a price if you can show one. Google's guidance on its AI features is plain about this: "There are no additional technical requirements." A page that can appear in ordinary search with a snippet can be linked from AI Overviews and AI Mode.

2. Be on the lists your buyers' questions pull from

Directories appeared in 9 of 14 provider answers and agency-written lists in 9 of 14. Search your own buyer questions and note which independent directories come up for your trade.

Then make sure your entry there is complete and accurate. A list written by a competitor is that competitor's marketing, so start with the independent ones.

3. Publish the count nobody else has

Where answers ran out of Singapore figures, they fell back on global counts, and one small local count got cited. A dated, reproducible number about your trade, with a public method, gives an engine something to quote.

It doesn't need to be big. Our census was one day's work.

Two checks to run before any of that

Start here:

  1. Let the crawlers in. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Our robots.txt census found no site in its sample blocking it, but check yours.
  2. Ask your own questions, logged out. Write the ten questions your buyers would ask, run them with personalisation off, and sort the sources by type, as we did here. Our guide on how to check whether ChatGPT recommends your business walks through it.

What would we skip as a first move?

We'd hold off on forum posts and news pitches aimed at getting named as a provider. In this run they supplied none of the citations in provider answers. They may help elsewhere, but this run gives no reason to lead with them.

If you're comparing generative engine optimization services in Singapore, our six checks before you hire an AI SEO agency and the generative engine optimisation guide cover what to ask.

Method

  • Questions: 30 fixed English prompts in four groups (hiring 10, price 5, how-to 10, numbers 5), written and saved before the first run.
  • Engines and dates: Perplexity ran all 30; ChatGPT ran a pre-chosen 10. All runs were on 2 October 2026, one run per question per engine.
  • Perplexity: a logged-in Pro account, default mode chosen by the engine. Citations are every link in the answer's sources panel; most panels held 10.
  • ChatGPT: temporary chat, personalisation off, default model, web search left to the engine. Citations are the first link of each visible chip, plus inline link cards. Place cards (business name and rating) aren't counted as sources. One question got a clarifying reply and one was answered without a search.
  • Excluded: one personalised ChatGPT run, kept in the file and flagged, left out of every count.
  • Sorting: each cited website was assigned a source type by its address and page path, checked by hand. An agency page whose path reads like a "best" or "top agencies" ranking counts as an agency-written list. Cited pages weren't opened.
  • Counting agencies: we hand-counted distinct agencies named in each answer. Tools and directories don't count as agencies, nor do platforms.
  • Reproduce: the anonymised file below has one row per citation. Our editorial policy explains how we sample and what we never publish.

Limits

  • One day, one run. AI answers change from run to run. This is a snapshot, not a ranking or a stable share.
  • Personalisation on Perplexity. It ran on a logged-in Pro account, and 5 of the 30 answers came back in Indonesian. That suggests account settings shaped the answers, and possibly the sources. Perplexity never named SingRank, so it didn't inflate our own result.
  • ChatGPT is a floor. Hidden sources weren't opened, so its 32 citations undercount what it read.
  • One market. These are questions about hiring SEO and GEO help in Singapore. A dentist or a mover may see a different mix. Test your own.
  • Sorted by address, not by reading. An agency blog post with genuinely independent analysis still counts as an agency site.
  • No cause shown. Nothing here proves that a listing, a press release or a page of figures makes an engine name a business.
  • No business named. Agency names were counted, not published, and every agency address in the file is replaced by a code.

FAQ

Which sources do ChatGPT and Perplexity cite for Singapore buyer questions?

In our 2 October 2026 run, agencies' own pages more than any other type. Agency sites supplied 166 of 341 citations and agency-written lists another 28. When an answer named providers, all 119 of its citations came from agency sites, agency-written lists, directories and press releases.

Do Reddit, forums or news stories get a business named?

Not in this run. They were cited, but only in price, how-to and number answers: 6 forum citations and 22 media citations across all 341. In the 14 answers that named agencies, they supplied none. That's one market on one day, so test your own.

Do press releases get cited by AI answers?

Yes, here. Press releases republished on news sites supplied 12 citations, and they appeared in 7 of the 14 answers that named agencies. The same release was cited in five Perplexity answers. Whether a release makes an engine name you wasn't tested.

Why was SingRank not named?

We don't know, and we won't guess past what we counted. Our service pages weren't cited in any of the 15 hiring runs. The pages that did get us cited were a census, our blog index and LinkedIn posts. That's the gap we're working on, using the checklist above.

Are there Singapore specialists for AEO and GEO implementation?

Yes, plenty. The 14 hiring answers in this run named agencies 86 times between them, so names are easy to find.

Checking one is harder. Ask a provider to show the source-type table for your own buyer questions, before and after their work, and run our six checks before you hire. We name no agency here.

How do AEO agencies in Singapore price and structure their engagements?

We can only speak for our own pricing, and we don't quote anyone else's. SingRank's Premium Starter is S$500 a month with a three-month minimum, with 10 articles a month plus search and AI-answer work. A one-hour consultation is S$150. Whoever you talk to, ask what's included in a monthly AEO retainer, in writing.
