Plumber, Choke or Leak: Which Search Is a Customer?

Contents10

An owner asks us to get his plumbing company ranking for "plumber". Fair enough. Then we pull what Singapore actually types around that work, and three phrasings turn out to carry three different people: one who wants a price, one who wants to fix it himself, and one who wants someone at the door.

Here is the split. On 16 October 2026 (Singapore time) we pulled 91 Google autocomplete suggestions for three Singapore seeds through our own keyword tool. Of the 45 suggestions around the trade name, 12 contained a money word and 12 contained "review", "reddit" or "complaints". Of the 32 around the problem word "toilet choke", 27 were someone trying to clear it themselves and none mentioned money. Of the 14 around "water leak repair singapore", 10 said Singapore and 4 asked the cost.

One trade. Three vocabularies. If you build pages for the wrong one you will get traffic that was never going to call you.

What we pulled, and how we grouped it

Three seeds, market set to Singapore, quick depth: "plumber singapore" (45 suggestions returned), "toilet choke" (32) and "water leak repair singapore" (14). That is 91 rows, every one a real Google autocomplete query. Google's own autocomplete documentation says that "Once you start to type, autocomplete predictions reflect real searches that have been done on Google", and also warns that it "doesn't simply display the most common queries on a given topic". So these are real phrasings, not a ranking of popularity.

We grouped them by literal word matching, so you can repeat the count: a money group (price, cost, cheap, rate, charge, fee, quote), a checking group (review, reddit, complaints), a named-firm group, a do-it-yourself group (how to, what to do, what clogs, plunger, cleaner, powder, pump, solution), a near-me group, and a career group (salary, how to be a plumber, work visa, course). A row can land in more than one group. We are counting suggestions, not people and not searches.

We publish no volume estimates from this tool anywhere on this site. Where it has real numbers they come from our clients' Search Console data, which is not ours to publish, and where it does not they are scaled estimates. Counts and groupings are the honest part, so counts and groupings are what you get.

The trade-name search: price, and other people's names

Of the 45 suggestions around "plumber singapore", 12 carried a money word and 12 carried "review", "reddit" or "complaints". Eight named a specific plumbing firm.

That second group deserves attention. Those eight rows are not people looking for a plumber in the abstract. They are people who already have a name in hand and are checking it, including one suggestion that pairs a company name with the word "complaints" and another that pairs it with "reddit". Your brand name plus review is a search you can answer. Your competitor's brand name plus review is not your page to write.

Five of the 45 asked for a list or a PDF, in forms like "plumber singapore price list pdf". Six said "near me". One said "gov", which is a person looking for the official register rather than a company, and we covered what the register says in today's measurement of licence proof on plumber websites.

Five of the 45 were from someone who wants to become a plumber, not hire one: salary twice, "how to be a plumber singapore", and a work visa query. That is 11% of the suggestions around your main trade name belonging to the labour market rather than the customer market.

The problem word: 27 of 32 want to do it themselves

Of the 32 suggestions around "toilet choke", 27 matched the do-it-yourself group. Not one contained a money word. The five that did not match were the bare phrase and its variants: "toilet choke", "toilet choke up", "toilet choke in chinese", "toilet choke singapore" and "toilet bowl choke singapore".

Read the 27 and the intent is unmistakable: plunger, pump, choke-up cleaner, cleaner acid, cleaner powder, "best toilet choke up cleaner powder", "how to clear toilet choke", "what to do when toilet is choked", "toilet clogs for no reason". These are shopping and instruction searches. The nearest thing to a buying signal in the whole set is "toilet choke up cleaner near me", and that buyer is heading to a hardware shop.

Two of the 32 said Singapore. That is the other half of the problem. The problem word is global, so a page built on it competes with the entire English-speaking internet, and the one Singapore marker in the set ("choke", which is how this is said here and not elsewhere) is the only local advantage you have.

We are not saying ignore it. We are saying price it correctly: a page answering "how to clear a toilet choke" is a page that earns trust and occasionally earns the call when the plunger fails. It is not a lead page, and treating it as one is how owners conclude that content does not work. There is a version of this worth writing, and we set out the shape in write the page that tells buyers how to skip you.

The outcome phrase is the one that behaves like a customer

Of the 14 suggestions around "water leak repair singapore", 10 said Singapore and 4 asked what it costs. None was a do-it-yourself query and none named a firm.

This is the cleanest set of the three. The rows name the work the way a person with a problem and a budget names it: water leakage repair, water pipe leak repair, water seepage repair, water leak detection, water leak detection price, roof leak repair. Nobody is asking how to fix a concealed pipe leak with a plunger, because nobody can.

The pattern holds across our Singapore data generally. When we pulled 620 town-level suggestions last month, 265 of them kept the town name rather than drifting to something generic. Local, specific, outcome-shaped phrases are where the buying happens, and they are also the phrases nobody writes a dedicated page for.

Two seeds that walked out of Singapore

We tried two more seeds and both left the country, which is a result worth publishing because owners do their own keyword research with exactly these phrases.

"Plumber price" returned 53 rows after the tool dropped 3 as belonging to other markets. Five of the rows it kept named a place that is not Singapore: Jalandhar, Vadodara, Kanpur, Bhopal and Utah.

"Licensed plumber" was worse. The tool found 90 candidates, returned 60 and dropped 6 as other markets, with the dropped examples naming the Philippines, Texas and Florida. Of the 60 it returned, 5 named Singapore or PUB. Six named a place outside Singapore. And 21 of the 60 came from someone who wants to be a licensed plumber: course, application, portal, review centre, licence price, hourly earnings.

So your credential, written as a bare phrase, is a global phrase mostly searched by other plumbers. Add "singapore" and it becomes a buyer phrase again, with 5 rows to its name. That is the whole lesson of seed choice in one trade.

What this changes about the pages on your site

Four calls, in the order we would make them.

  • One page per outcome, named the way buyers name it. Water leak repair, water heater replacement, toilet choke clearing, concealed pipe leak detection. Use their noun, not your service-catalogue noun. These are the phrases that said Singapore and asked the price.
  • Answer the do-it-yourself question honestly, once. A short page that tells someone how to clear a simple choke, and the point at which to stop. Expect trust from it, not leads. Do not build nine of them.
  • Own your own name. Your brand plus review, plus price, plus complaints if you are brave. Eight of 45 suggestions were people checking a named firm, and the only one of those you can influence is yours.
  • Publish the price list they keep asking for, with a date on it. Five of 45 asked for a list or a PDF. A dated list on a page beats a PDF, because a page can be read by a machine and updated in a minute.

What not to do: build a separate page for every phrasing of the same question. We measured what that produces in one question, nine phrasings. And do not pay anyone to chase your trade name alone. It is the phrase where the career searches and the competitor-checking searches live.

Honest arithmetic. A page answering "how to clear a toilet choke" takes a couple of hours to write properly, and most of the people it reaches will fix the problem without you. You are buying familiarity and the fraction who fail, not a pipeline.

If that trade does not appeal, skip it. We would rather tell you that than sell you 10 informational pages because the group was the biggest one in the data. The biggest group in a keyword set is not the same as the best group, and reading a trend or a cluster correctly is most of the skill.

Method and limits — read these before quoting

  • Source and date. Google Autocomplete, pulled through SingRank's own keyword tool with market set to Singapore, on 16 October 2026, Singapore time. Three seeds for the main counts, two further seeds reported separately.
  • Counts, not volumes. Every figure is a count of returned suggestions. We publish no monthly volume estimates from this tool, for the reasons given above.
  • No trend claims. Google says autocomplete should not be compared with Google Trends and does not simply show the most common queries, so we make no claim here about anything rising or falling.
  • Grouping is literal. Matching is by word, so a row mentioning price and review counts in both groups, and a phrase that implies a price without using a money word is not counted.
  • Autocomplete is personalised and regional. Your own list may differ. Pull your own before acting on ours.
  • One morning. A snapshot of 16 October 2026, not a trend line.

FAQ

What do Singapore customers search before calling a plumber?

They search three different ways. Around the trade name, 12 of 45 suggestions we pulled on 16 October 2026 asked about money and 12 were checking reviews or Reddit. Around the problem word "toilet choke", 27 of 32 wanted to fix it themselves. Around "water leak repair singapore", 4 of 14 asked the cost.

Is "toilet choke" a good keyword for a plumbing company?

Only as a trust page. In our pull, 27 of 32 suggestions around it were do-it-yourself or product searches and none mentioned money, so expect few enquiries. Two of 32 even mentioned Singapore, meaning the phrase competes globally. Outcome phrases such as water leak repair behave far more like customers.

Why not publish search volumes for these keywords?

Because our tool's real numbers come from our clients' Search Console data, which belongs to them, and its other numbers are scaled estimates. A count of suggestions and how they group is something we can show and you can repeat. A volume estimate dressed up as a fact is not.

Do people search for plumbing jobs using the same words as customers?

Yes, and it distorts the trade name. Five of the 45 suggestions around "plumber singapore" were career searches, including salary, how to become a plumber and a work visa query. For the bare phrase "licensed plumber", 21 of 60 rows came from someone wanting the licence rather than the service.

Should a plumber publish a price list as a PDF?

Publish it as a page with a date on it. Five of the 45 trade-name suggestions asked for a list or a PDF, so the demand is real, but a PDF is slower for a person on a phone and harder for a search system to quote. A dated page answers both.
