Divorce Without a Lawyer: 24 of 139 Singapore Searches
Contents10
A Singapore family practice's marketing usually assumes the person searching wants a lawyer. Pull the actual phrasings and that assumption breaks in two places at once.
We pulled four legal seeds through our keyword tool for the Singapore market on 4 October 2026 and got 139 unique real search suggestions. 28 ask what it costs. 24 ask how to do it without a lawyer. And 36 were not a prospective client at all. The avoidance group is almost as large as the price group, and nobody in the industry writes for it.
This is a read of what people type, not of who ranks. Our study of 12 Singapore family-law fee pages looks at the other side, the websites.
What we pulled, and what came back
Four seeds, chosen to cover the service, the service plus price, and the service plus a problem: "divorce lawyer singapore", "lawyer singapore", "divorce cost singapore" and "divorce without lawyer". Market set to Singapore. Source: Google Autocomplete and Google Trends, pulled through SingRank's keyword tool on 4 October 2026.
That returned 146 rows, 139 of them unique once we removed the suggestions two seeds both produced. The tool dropped a further 8 as belonging to another market — Texas, the UK, Australia, India and California versions of the same question — which is a reminder that a legal phrase in English is a global phrase before it is a Singapore one.
We do not publish monthly volume figures, because ours derive partly from the Search Console data of businesses we work for. What we can say about scale: 20 of the 146 rows had enough Google Trends signal for the tool to scale them at all. The other 126 came back as autocomplete ideas with no measurable trend line. Real phrasings, thin individual demand — normal for a long tail, and worth knowing before anyone sells you a 60-keyword plan.
We then sorted all 139 into one bucket each, taking the strongest signal in the phrase.

36 of 139 searches were not a client at all
Add the statistics, career and law-curiosity rows and 36 of 139 suggestions come from somebody who is never going to instruct you.
Twelve were about the profession rather than the service: "lawyer singapore salary", "lawyer singapore jobs", "how to become a lawyer singapore", "best singapore law school". Eleven were curiosity about rules: "singapore law for chewing gum", "singapore law for vaping", "singapore law for child seat", "singapore law for scammer". Thirteen were after the divorce rate, in six year and phrasing variants.
These are the searches a generic blog calendar chases. They are easy to write, they look like traffic, and a page that wins "divorce rate singapore" brings you students and journalists. We have seen the same shape in other trades — 10 of 37 personal-trainer searches wanted the job, not the trainer. Count the intent before you count the volume, and if you publish law-curiosity pieces anyway, fund them as reputation work.
28 ask what it costs
The largest buyer group asks the price, in every register: "divorce lawyer singapore fee", "divorce lawyer fees singapore", "divorce lawyer cost singapore", "how much does divorce cost singapore", "contested divorce cost singapore", "divorce lawyer singapore cheapest", "best affordable divorce lawyer singapore", "lawyer rates singapore", "lawyer fee for will singapore".
Two things stand out. First, how often "cheap", "cheapest" and "affordable" appear — six of the 28. Those are not people shopping on price alone; they are people who do not know whether this costs $2,000 or $20,000 and are bracing for the worse answer.
Second, the word "will". "lawyer fee for will singapore", "lawyer will singapore cost" and "singapore lawyer for will" all turned up, so the price question is not confined to divorce. If your practice does wills and probate alongside family work, each matter needs its own price answer, not one fee page covering the firm.
24 want to do it without you
Twenty-four of 139 suggestions are a person trying to avoid hiring a lawyer: "divorce without lawyer singapore", "can i file for divorce without lawyer singapore", "how to file for divorce without a lawyer in singapore", "do you really need a lawyer for a divorce", "how to get a divorce if you can't afford a lawyer", "divorce lawyer near me pro bono", "divorce lawyer no fee", "divorce without lawyer cost". One of the 24 named a foreign jurisdiction, so call it 23 for Singapore purposes.
Here is the part that makes this group different from a price shopper. The answer they are looking for is already published by the court, in plain language. The Family Justice Courts' simplified-track page states: "You do not need to have a lawyer in a divorce case. However, you may choose to engage one if you need independent legal advice on the merits of your case or the divorce process." The same page prices the court's own step: "File the matrimonial application for divorce $56".
So the reader can find out, from an authoritative source, that you are optional. Pretending otherwise on your website does not change that; it just means the page they trust is not yours.
The page we would write answers honestly and then draws the line. Yes, you can file yourself, and here is what the court charges. Here is what the simplified track requires both of you to agree on. And here are the four or five situations where doing it alone costs more than the fee you saved — a disputed asset, a child arrangement you will have to vary later, a spouse who stops cooperating halfway. That page serves the search and sorts the self-filers from the people who should not be self-filing. We argued the general version in buyers search how to skip you, write that page.
The cost is real. Some readers will take the court's route and never contact you, and you will have helped them do it. In our view you were never going to bill those people anyway.
Only 8 said "near me"
Eight of 139 suggestions carried "near me": "lawyer singapore near me", "divorce lawyer near me uncontested", "divorce lawyer near me female", "divorce lawyer near me indian", "law firm singapore near me".
Nobody is choosing a divorce lawyer by walking distance. Look at what those searches actually modify: matter type, the lawyer's gender, community and language. In a matter this personal, proximity is a proxy for fit.
So write the profile page before the estate page. Languages spoken, who you are, which matters you take — those are the distinguishing details. Our local SEO guide for Singapore covers the Maps mechanics, but for family law the map pack is not where this is won.
Only 5 named a practice
Five of 139 suggestions named one specific Singapore practice followed by "review" or "reviews". Four more wanted reviews or forum opinion in general. Separately, five phrasings across the four pulls ended in "reddit".
Read those nine rows together and you get the shape of the funnel. A handful of people arrive holding a name and checking it. Everyone else arrives holding a question. The shortlist is built somewhere other than Google — a friend, a forum, a referral — and the search is the verification step.
What that asks of you is a page that survives being checked. Your own name plus "review" should return something you wrote, your Google Business Profile should be complete, and third-party listings carrying your description should say what you would say. Eighteen of 139 suggestions asked who is "best", and those results are largely held by listicles rather than practices, as we measured in best-of lists hold 28 of 60 slots.
What we would build from this, in order
- One price page per matter, not per firm. Uncontested divorce, contested divorce, wills, probate. Each with a number and a line saying what the number includes.
- The "can I do this without a lawyer" page. Answer yes where the answer is yes, quote the court's own fee, then name the situations where self-filing costs more than it saves.
- A profile page that answers fit. Languages, community, matter types, who you actually are.
- Your name plus "review". Make sure something you control ranks for it.
- Nothing for the divorce rate. Unless you want students and journalists, in which case label it as reputation work and expect no enquiries.
What this read does not tell you
Autocomplete returns phrasings, not people, so the number of suggestions measures how many ways a thing gets typed rather than how many times. Our buckets are our own judgement, applied in a fixed priority order so a phrase containing both a price word and an avoidance word lands in avoidance; another analyst would move a handful of rows. And nothing here tells you which of these searches your practice could rank for, which depends on your site and your competitors, not on the demand.
The honest version of the exercise: if this read had come back thin, the right advice would be not to buy search marketing at all. It did not — there are at least four distinct buyer questions with pages missing against them. But we run the same check before a business incorporates precisely because the answer is sometimes no.
Want this read on your own practice area?
Tell us the one matter that should bring you work — conveyancing, employment, probate, criminal — and we will pull the Singapore suggestions for it, sort them the way we sorted these 139, and tell you which pages you are missing. That starts as a free visibility check through our contact page.
If you want the pages written and measured, our SEO, AEO and GEO programme starts from S$500/month on a 3-month minimum, and our guide to SEO for law firms in Singapore sets out the compliant version first. We will not promise you a ranking or an AI citation, and we will tell you when the demand is too thin to be worth your money.
Search suggestions were collected on 4 October 2026 for the Singapore market. Counts describe that pull and will change. This page names no business. Nothing here is legal advice; marketing guidance only, and you should confirm your own position with the Law Society of Singapore.
FAQ
What do Singapore buyers actually search before hiring a lawyer?
Mostly price and escape. Of 139 Singapore suggestions pulled on 4 October 2026, 28 asked what it costs and 24 asked how to proceed without a lawyer. Another 18 asked who is best, and only 8 added "near me". Price and self-filing are the two questions most practice websites answer worst.
Do people search for divorce lawyers "near me" in Singapore?
Rarely, and not for distance. Eight of 139 suggestions used "near me", and they modified the lawyer's gender, community, language or matter type rather than a location. For family work, fit matters more than proximity, so write the profile page before the estate page.
Should a law firm write about doing a divorce without a lawyer?
In our view yes. Twenty-four of 139 suggestions asked exactly that, and the Family Justice Courts already answer it: "You do not need to have a lawyer in a divorce case." A page that says so honestly, then names when self-filing costs more, earns the trust that a silent page cannot.
Can I cite these counts?
Yes. Please cite "SingRank, Singapore legal search demand read, 4 October 2026" with a link to this page, and quote each count with its base of 139 suggestions. We publish no monthly volume figures. Challenges are welcome through our contact page.
